About the x / twitter character counter

Different platforms have different character limits, and writing 'one post for all platforms' usually means none of them gets the right length. This counter shows your text against every major platform limit live as you type - so you know which platforms a draft fits and which need a tighter version.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored or sent to a server. You can paste long drafts (essays, threads, scripts) and the counter will keep updating in real time.

Character limits by platform (2026)

X (Twitter): 280 for free, 25,000 for X Premium. LinkedIn posts: 3,000. LinkedIn comments: 1,250. Threads: 500. Bluesky: 300. Mastodon (default instance): 500. Telegram messages: 4,096. Reddit text posts: 40,000. Most personal-brand posts that perform well are 1,000–2,000 characters on LinkedIn, 240–270 on X, 350–450 on Threads.

Word count vs character count

Character count is what platforms enforce. Word count is what readers care about. Reading-time estimates are a better quality signal than character count when comparing posts - 250 well-chosen words usually beat 600 padded ones for engagement, even though the longer post hits closer to LinkedIn's 3,000 character limit.

FAQ

Is this counter free?

Yes, completely free with no signup. Everything runs in your browser; your text isn't sent anywhere.

Does it work for X Premium posts (longer than 280)?

Yes. The counter shows your text against both the 280-character free limit and X Premium's 25,000-character limit so you know which audience can read the full version.

Does it count threads?

Yes - paste a multi-tweet thread (each separated by a line break or '---') and the counter tells you which tweets fit the limit and which need to be split.

Will the counter work offline?

Yes. Everything runs client-side in JavaScript. Once the page is loaded you can disconnect and it'll keep counting.

What's a good post length for LinkedIn?

Most high-performing LinkedIn personal-brand posts in 2026 land between 1,000 and 2,000 characters. Anything under 300 tends to read like a tweet and is treated as one by the algorithm; anything over 2,500 risks being collapsed under 'See more'.
